dc.descriptionThis paper reflects on the urban trends and challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean within the context of sustainable development and the new urban agenda. This reflection aims to contribute to a plan of work for cities for the next 20 years; which has begun to be discussed in different spaces and at different levels, leading to the signing of agreements during the third Conference of Sustainable Development and Housing (Habitat III), which took place in October 2016 in Quito. The document outlines socio-demographic changes with new urban impacts: the global and highly informal economic model; the unequal construction of cities incoherent, outdated and incomplete land management systems that include informal and legal forms of tenure; the unsustainable use of natural resources; the lack of transparency on the part of government systems and insufficient local self-funding, urban violence and the historical debt in terms urban studies and planning in the Caribbean region, are amongst the most significant urban challenges for the next decades.en-US
dc.descriptionEste documento corresponde a una reflexión de las tendencias y desafíos urbanos latinoamericanos y del Caribe de cara a los objetivos de desarrollo sustentable y a la nueva agenda urbana. La reflexión pretende ser insumo para el plan de trabajo de los próximos 20 años en nuestras ciudades, que ha comenzado a discutirse en diversos espacios a distintos niveles, para sellar acuerdos durante la 3ª Conferencia sobre Desarrollo Sustentable y Vivienda (HABITAT III), realizada en octubre de 2016 en Quito. El documento señala que los cambios socio-demográficos con nuevos rostros urbanos; el modelo económico global y altamente informal en la Región; la forma inequitativa de construir ciudad incluidos los sistemas de administración de tierra urbana incoherentes, desactualizados, incompletos con tenencia informal e ilegal; el uso no sustentable de los recursos naturales; la falta de transparencia de los sistemas de gobernanza con auto financiamiento local insuficiente, las violencias urbanas y la deuda histórica en materia de estudio y planificación urbana en el Caribe, cuentan entre los mayores desafíos urbanos de las próximas décadas.es-ES
