The roman bellum iustum established a relatively narrow frame within which the Republic had to conform for the sake of justify the wars it undertook, generating, because of this, a diversity of validating speeches to meet its requirements. In the present paper we explore the possibility of a recurrent argument’s construction to support wars, backed in the figure of “hereditary enemies” as justification for the roman expansion, analyzing direct antecedents and roman’s society aspects that may have rooted this idea.El bellum iustum romano establecía un marco jurídico relativamente estrecho dentro del cual la República debía ajustarse para justificar las guerras que emprendía generando, en consecuencia, una serie de discursos validadores que buscaban cumplir esta función. En este artículo se revisa la alternativa de la construcción de un argumento recurrente a favor de la guerra en torno a la figura de los “enemigos hereditarios” como justificativo de la expansión romana, explorando tanto los expedientes directos, como aquellos aspectos de la sociedad romana que pudieron servir de trasfondo a esta idea.
