One of the agents involved in the production of wine is the wine cooperatives, which had as a basic objective to integrate small and medium wine growers in an entity that would allow them to improve technology and market their production efficiently. Evaluate their activity involves reviewing an edge of the historical context that has had agricultural development in the area, in this way the documentary review of the five cooperatives established in the Itata Valley in the period from 1925 to 1995, through the qualitative hermeneutics method raised in the balance sheets, minutes, laws and regulations, showing that the experience of these institutions did not produce all the expected benefits due to its local approach and the policies of the different governments that posed a brake on cooperativism as a tool for economic development, to be attributed a political and social connotation over economic and technical.Uno de los agentes participantes en la producción del vino lo constituyen las cooperativas vitivinícolas, las cuales tenían como objetivo básico integrar a pequeños y medianos viticultores en una entidad que les permitiera mejorar la tecnología y comercializar en forma eficiente su producción. Evaluar su actividad implica revisar una arista del contexto histórico que ha tenido el desarrollo agrícola en la zona, de esta forma la revisión documental de las cinco cooperativas establecidas en el Valle del Itata en el periodo comprendido entre 1925 a 1995, a través del método cualitativo hermenéutico planteado en los balances, actas, leyes y reglamentos, mostrando que la experiencia de estas instituciones no produjo todos los beneficios esperados debido a su enfoque localista y por las políticas de los diferentes gobiernos que plantearon frenos al cooperativismo como herramienta de desarrollo económico, al atribuírsele una connotación política y social por sobre la económica y técnica.
