Aunque la historiografía acerca de la relación entre la Iglesia yel Estado en el México del siglo diecinueve ha avanzado en losúltimos años, lo cierto es que la versión que prevalece sobrela misma sigue siendo planteada en términos de confrontaciónentre dos proyectos: el liberal / progresista y el católico /retrogrado, que son representados como bloques monolíticos,cerrados y perfectamente diferenciados. En este contexto, elpresente texto hace un análisis de la prensa liberal que circulópor las calles de Ciudad de México a mediados del siglo XIX ytrata de matizar el enfoque anterior para demostrar las característicasesenciales de un liberalismo católico que destacó porser anticlerical pero no antirreligioso.Palabras clave: México, liberalismo, catolicismo, prensa, sigloXIX.While the historiography about the relationship between thechurch and the state in nineteenth century Mexico advancedin the recent years, the version that prevails about this relationshipcontinues to be raised in terms of the confrontationbetween two projects -the liberal/progressive and the catholic/retrograde. The confrontation is represented as monolithic,closed, and perfectly differentiated. In this context, this paperanalyzes the liberal press that circulated through the streets ofMexico City in the mid-nineteenth century and seeks to redefinethe previous approach in order to demonstrate that the essentialcharacteristics of a Catholic liberalism was exceptionalfor being anticlerical but not antireligious.Keywords: Mexico, liberalism, Catholicism, press, nineteenthcentury.
