This article explores cultural practices and discourses with reference to death in the Chilean-Peruvian border, particularly in the city of Arica, of “chileanization” and its representations by local journalists. Methodologically, the article dissects the recognized phenomenon of three derived rituals: visitation, funeral and funeral speeches. Textual analysis of the contents of the former two were conducted; the latter was apprehended following the ideas of Lakoff and Johnson concerning metaphors. The conclusions support the importance of hemerographic heuristics in writing the history of death, not excluding other kinds of sources; the difficulty of finding local features that affirm the existence of a mortuary culture in Arica; the classist exclusions realized by the press in reporting about death and, finally, the vital importance of metaphors in funeral speeches.Se exploran las prácticas y los discursos culturales producidos por la muerte en la frontera chileno-peruana, particularmente en la Arica de la “chilenización” y su representación por la industria periodística local. La metodología aplicada disecciona el fenómeno reconociendo tres ritualidades derivadas: velorios, funerales y discursos fúnebres. Las dos primeras fueron sometidas a un análisis textual de sus contenidos, la última fue comprendida siguiendo las ideas de Lakoff y Johnson sobre las metáforas. Las conclusiones sostienen la importancia de la heurística hemerográfica para historiar la muerte, no excluyendo el uso de otras fuentes; las dificultades para encontrar rasgos locales que afirmen la existencia de una cultura mortuoria ariqueña; la exclusión clasista realizada por la prensa para informar de la muerte y, por último, la importancia vital de las metáforas en los discursos fúnebres.
