The scourge of the cholera battered the Chilean people in more than three instances throughout history, moving around different cities. It fell in Valparaiso between 1886 and 1888, bringing with it panic, unease, and death, revealing the hidden face of a city and its weaknesses. The angel of death terrorised every corner of Valparaiso, for people had to learn how to live with sick relatives and their eventual deaths. The regional authorities, like the Health Board, acted according to and within the limits of their power, but their efforts were often overwhelmed by the precariousness and lack of sanitation at the time. The hygienism, medical advances, and welfare were painkillers for a society that was being torn apart due to cholera. Despite such a catastrophe, the worst and the best of humanity emerged. While many Valparaiso residents tried to help, the high society moved away to their countryside houses in order to escape from the scourge.El flagelo del cólera azotó al pueblo de Chile por más de tres oportunidades en toda su historia, moviéndose por diferentes ciudades, recae en Valparaíso entre los años 1886 y 1888, trayendo consigo pánico, desazón y muerte mostrando la cara oculta de una ciudad sus falencias y debilidades. El ángel de la muerte aterrorizo cada rincón de Valparaíso, la gente tuvo que aprender a vivir con el sentimiento de un familiar enfermo y posteriormente muerto. Las autoridades regionales, como la Junta de Salubridad actuaron conforme a sus poderes lo permitían, pero sus esfuerzos muchas veces se vieron sobrepasados por la precariedad e insalubridad de la época en Valparaíso. El higienismo, los adelantos médicos y la beneficencia fueron un calmante para una sociedad que se quebraba debido al cólera. Aun así cuando ocurre una catástrofe de estas medidas emerge lo peor y mejor del ser humano, mientras muchos de los habitantes de Valparaíso trataban de ayudar, otros de la elite se retiraban a sus casas de campo para huir del flagelo.
