Abstract
In the present work we will study the novel Pueblo Chico by Manuel J. Ortiz published in 1904, which describes the conflicts between two groups –natives and foreigners- in the town of Villabaja, through letters sent by the new parish priest who arrived at the village, his friend from the seminary period. These struggles represent the conflicts between liberals and conservatives that occurred at different scales in Chile at the beginning of the 20th century. Thus, through this literary work, we will try to analyze the local expressions of this struggle in connection with the national, and how literature can ultimately reflect the tensions of the moment.
