El presente artículo estudia el origen de la pedagogía de la Compañía de Jesús, la fundación de colegios durante el siglo XVI y la unificación de un modelo educacional basado en la formación de la virtud a través del estudio y la disciplina, formando individuos para el gobierno de las ciudades.  La fundación del Convictorio de San Francisco Xavier en Chile, tuvo como primer objetivo formar misioneros y predicadores, pero como el ideal de virtud jesuita era tanto religioso como secular, a sus aulas asistió la mayoría de la nobleza criolla que aspiraba a los cargos de gobierno.  La persistencia del modelo educacional jesuita luego de la expulsión, demuestra el impacto que ésta tuvo en la conformación de la sociedad criolla, por la promoción de un ideal de hombre que en tanto virtuoso y vinculado a una unidad política mayor, era semejante al ideal del ciudadano republicano. Palabras clave: jesuitas, colegios, virtud, recogimiento, República.The present article studies the origins of the pedagogical thought of the Compañía deJesus, the foundation of colleges and the unification of an educational model based on the formation of virtue through the study and discipline, educating individuals for the government of the cities. The foundation of the Convictorio de San Francisco Xavier in Chile, had as its main objective the formation of missioners and predicators, but as the Jesuit ideal of virtue was both religious and secular, their classrooms werefilled by the major nobility of creoles that pretended the government chairs. Thepersistence of the Jesuit model once they were expulsed, demonstrates the impactthat it had in the formation of the society of creoles, by the promotion of an ideal ofman that, as virtous and bound to a major political unity, was similar to the idealof the republican citizen.Key words: Jesuits, colleges, virtue, seclusion, Republic.
