El presente artículo da cuenta de cuán extendida estaba la alfabetización en Chile a mediados del siglo XIX. A partir de los resultados del primer censo nacional de la República levantado en 1854 y del análisis de sus padrones, es posible reflexionar respecto de cómo el Estado midió las bases sociales de su política educacional. El ejercicio metodológico a partir de dichas estadísticas revela que, desde la perspectiva del Estado, hubo una necesidad política de enseñar a leer y escribir como garantía de una nación civilizada a través de la fundación del sistema de instrucción primaria.  Desde la población, cabe preguntarse si esa necesidad tuvo un sustento real en la sociedad.  El análisis de los padrones censales revela la inexistencia de una necesidad social por la alfabetización.  Palabras clave: historia, educación, estadística, alfabetización, sociedad.This paper deals indicates how widespread was literacy in Chile, in the mid-nineteenthcentury. Using both the data collected by the first national census of 1854 as wellas the census registers of 1854, it is possible to describe the way in which the Statemeasured its educational policy. After analyzing this information, it can be concludedthat the concern of the State was to develop a policy of literacy (read and write)through a system of primary instruction; this was the sign of a civilized nation.However, from the perspective of the population, it should be asked whether such aconcern was actually shared by the society. The analysis of the census registers leadsto conclude the inexistence of a demand for education by the society.Key words: history; education, statistics, literacy; society.
