The objective of this research is to evaluate psychometrically the properties of an instrument to describe the pre-writing skill level, PE-56 (Condemarín & Chadwick, 1991). The sample was composed of 77 preschool children of about 5 years old. The Scoring System was modified by an adaptation of the Global Scoring System Bender-II. PE-56 was applied in small groups, and internal structure, reliability and relationships with external criteria (Bender-II and VMI-4) were analyzed. Good reliability (0.82) and an underlying unidimensional model of the items were found, but with error covariance between two items; the correlation with visual-motor tests was different according to the scoring method in these measures, obtaining different correlations between performance of pre-writing test and visual-motor tests. The use and limits of the instrument are discussed.El objetivo de la presente investigación es evaluar psicométricamente las propiedades de un instrumento para describir el nivel de habilidad pre-escritora, PE-56 (Condemarín & Chadwick, 1991). La muestra fue conformada por 77 preescolares de alrededor de 5 años de edad. Se hizo una modificación de su sistema de calificación, mediante una adaptación del Sistema Global de Calificación del Bender-II. Se aplicó el PE-56 en grupos pequeños, y se analizó la estructura interna, confiabilidad y relaciones con criterios externos, para lo cual se aplicó el Bender-II y VMI-4. Se halló buena confiabilidad (0.82) y un modelo unidimensional subyacente a los ítems, pero con covariación de errores entre dos ítems; la correlación con pruebas visomotoras fue diferente de acuerdo al método de calificación, obteniendo distintas correlaciones entre el rendimiento en la prueba de pre-escritura y las pruebas visomotoras. Se discute el uso y límites del instrumento.
