El artículo intenta abordar, en su globalidad, la compleja y crítica situación actual de la educación en Chile, desde una perspectiva psicosocial particular: se propone reducir la crisis educacional a un problema formulable en términos de representaciones sociales. A partir de la revisión de algunos aspectos relevantes de la historia de la educación chilena, se elabora una hipótesis sobre la formación histórica de una contradicción entre dos representaciones sociales de la educación, en la cual se fundaría la crisis educacional. Se afirma que toda política educacional, para ser efectiva, debe considerar seriamente este problema fundamental y no restringirse ciegamente a cuestiones infraestructurales, curriculares y técnicas.The article attempts to approach the complex and critical current situation of the Chilean educational system as a whole from a particular psychosocial perspective: it proposes a reduction of the educational crisis to a problem formulated in terms of social representations. Based on the review of some relevant aspects of the Chilean educational system history, the authors formulate an hypothesis about the historical formation of a contradiction between two social representations of education, that would generate the crisis. They assert that any educational policy aimed to be effective must seriously consider this fundamental problem and not blindly limit itself to technical, curricular or material resources issues.
