La noción de metacomunicación se ha hecho popular en los medios académicos a partir de los planteamientos hechos por el llamado Enfoque Interaccional de la comunicación humana. En su influyente libro Pragmatics of Human Communication (Teoría de la Comunicación Humana. Watzlawick, Beavin & Jackson, 1981), los autores proponen una definición de (meta) comunicación que no ha dejado de ser incómoda y contradictoria. Desde un comienzo, el azioma referido a la metacomunicación  enunciado por los autores antes citados, resultó provocativo y permitió abrir nuevas dimensiones en el estudio y comprensión del fenómeno de la comunicación humana. Sin embargo, con el tiempo, han sido tan diversas como contradictorias sus aplicaciones y usos teóricos. Nos proponemos, por lo tanto, revisar y discutir el concepto de metacomunicación, haciendo un análisis crítico y proponiendo alternativas para redefinirlo y hacerlo más claro y operativo.The notion of metacommunication has become popular in the academic world since the work of the so called Interactional View of human communication. In their influential book Pragmatics of Human Communication (Watzlawick, Beavin & Jackson, 1981), the authors propose a definition of (meta) communication that is and has been inconvenient and contradictory. From its onset, the axiom related to metacommunication enunciated by these authors, was provocative and allowed opening new dimensions in the study and comprehension of the phenomenon of human communication. Nevertheless, over time its applications and theoretical uses have been diverse and contradictory. Our purpose is to review and discuss the concept of metacommunication, through a critical analysis, proposing alternatives for redefining it in order to make its comprehension more clear and operative
