dc.descriptionThe article presents a review of the literature about literacy acquisition in deaf children. It also includes the results of a study that attempts to provide an actualized view of the reading acquisition process in different educational settings serving deaf children in the metropolitan area in Santiago, Chile. More specifically, we aimed to: (a) identify the different approaches and methods used to teach reading and writing in these institutions and (b) describe the perceptions of educators of the deaf with regard to the difficulties faced by their students in the process of literacy acquisition. We carried out focus group interviews in five institutions, which involved a total sample of 40 teachers of the deaf. The results allowed us to identify some of the participants’ needs, difficulties, and expectations with regard to the process of educating deaf children. The article includes some thoughts about future research work in this field.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo presenta una revisión de la literatura sobre la adquisición de la literacidad en niños sordos. Se exponen además los resultados de un estudio cuyo objetivo general fue presentar una visión actualizada del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de la lectoescritura en distintos establecimientos de la Región Metropolitana que atienden a niños sordos. Más específicamente nos propusimos: (a) identificar los diferentes enfoques y metodologías para la enseñanza de la lectoescritura empleados en estos establecimientos educacionales y (b) describir las percepciones de los/as profesores/as de niños sordos acerca de las dificultades que enfrentan sus alumnos en la adquisición de la lectoescritura. Para ello se llevaron a cabo grupos focales en cinco establecimientos, con la participación de un total de 40 profesores especialistas en la atención de niños sordos. Los resultados permiten identificar algunas necesidades, dificultades y expectativas de los participantes en relación al proceso educativo con alumnos sordos. El artículo incluye reflexiones acerca de futuros trabajos de investigación en esta área.es-ES
