dc.descriptionThis paper studies the function of textual space in Final de novela en Patagonia (2000), by Mempo Giardinelli. The hypothesis of this research states that the novel is influenced by stereotypes of the Patagonian foundational texts (distance, desert, emptiness) for two main reasons: first, because the narrator himself is not from Patagonia and, secondly, because these narrative clichés are meant to serve artistic purposes.The “Thirdspace” theory, by Edward Soja, is used here to study the connection between a perceived spatiality, the conceived spatiality, and the lived spatiality. The basic contribution of Soja‟s theory is in its strategy called “Thirding-as-Othering” which challenges the traditional duality of thinking and performing critical analysis.en-US
dc.descriptionEn este artículo se estudia la función del espacio en Final de novela en Patagonia (2000) de Mempo Giardinelli. Nuestra hipótesis es que las descripciones de esta novela están muy influidas por los estereotipos del texto fundador (la lejanía, el desierto, el vacío) por dos razones fundamentales: primero, porque el narrador es un foráneo y, segundo, porque esos clichés son los que convienen a los fines artísticos de la novela.La teoría del “tercerespacio” (thirdspace) de Edward Soja nos sirvió para trabajar la interrelación dinámica entre la práctica espacial, las representaciones del espacio, y los espacios de representación. El aporte fundamental de esta teoría radica en su estrategia crítica de ver “lo Tercero como lo Otro” (Thirding-as-Othering), lo que cuestiona todo intento de confinar el pensamiento y la acción crítica en dos alternativas.es-ES
