Television Parental Mediation Strategies Used by Chilean Parents

| dc.description | This research examines the forms of parental mediation reported by 319 parents and guardians of 6–12 year-old children residents in Chile. The results show, first, that the forms of mediation detected in this country correspond to those observed in previous studies conducted in developed countries. Secondly, this research reports that Instructive Mediation (parents who actively comment on the contents of TV with their children) and Co-watching (with young children) were used more often than Restrictive Mediation (limiting spaces for TV watching). Additionally, the findings show that the greater use of these mediation strategies are significantly associated with the socioeconomic variable and with the number of hours that children watch TV. | en-US |
| dc.description | La presente investigación examina las formas de mediación parental que reportan usar 319 padres y apoderados de niños entre 6 y 12 años residentes en Chile. Los resultados muestran, en primer lugar, que las formas de mediación detectadas en este país corresponden a aquellas observadas anteriormente por estudios realizados en países desarrollados. En segundo lugar, la presente investigación reporta que la Mediación Instructiva (padres que comentan activamente los contenidos de TV a sus hijos) y el Covisionado (ver TV junto a los menores) son aquellas formas de mediación más usadas, por sobre la Mediación Restrictiva (limitar espacios para ver TV).Adicionalmente, los hallazgos permiten observar que el mayor uso de estas estrategias de mediación se asocia significativamente con la variable socioeconómica y con la cantidad de horas que los niños ven TV. | es-ES |
