During the XIX-th century, Chile made serious institutional efforts to developing Statistics as well as to use it as a diagnostic tool of the state of society. This paper shows how these efforts correspond to a Chilean official reception of Statistics as the science of a civilized and modern nation. Using some Sarmiento’s works, it is also described the conception about modernity, which was also coherent with the conception of Statistics.Durante el siglo XIX, Chile desplegó esfuerzos institucionales para desarrollar la Estadística y utilizarla como herramienta de diagnóstico social. Este trabajo muestra cómo este despliegue puede ser entendido como la recepción oficial Chilena de la Estadística como ciencia de un país civilizado y moderno. Acudiendo a ciertos trabajos desarrollados por Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, se muestra la concepción que había de modernidad, y que era coherente con la concepción de Estadística.
