Conceptual design is one of the key activities where the formal aspects and the appearance of the product are defined. This research argues that there is a concordant understanding during the development of the conceptual design process, commonly shared by the multiple domains of design. The purpose of the study was the identification and classification of a set of actions regarding the conceptual design activity and of the initial steps necessary to start the design process. To evaluate the approach, a questionnaire was applied to students of design and engineering of Chile, Spain and Mexico, from a series of consistent and coherent sequences and actions on which the discussion is elaborated. The analysis of the results obtained, is extracted from the degree of importance and frequency of the selected variables. The exploratory research identifies the initial steps and sequences that are part of a common structure, used in the development of the design process. There is a clear approach and concordance between designers and engineers for the resolution of the design problem.El diseño conceptual es una de las actividades clave donde se definen los aspectos formales y la apariencia del producto. Esta investigación sostiene que existe un entendimiento concordante durante el desarrollo del proceso de diseño conceptual, compartido comúnmente por los múltiples dominios del diseño. El propósito del estudio fue la identificación y clasificación de un conjunto de acciones en torno a la actividad de diseño conceptual y de los pasos iniciales necesarios desde el arranque del proceso de diseño. Para evaluar el planteamiento, se aplica un cuestionario a estudiantes de diseño e ingeniería de Chile, España y México, a partir de una serie de secuencias y acciones consistentes y coherentes sobre las que se delibera. Del análisis de los resultados obtenidos, se extrae el grado de importancia y frecuencia de las variables seleccionadas. La investigación de tipo exploratoria identifica los pasos iniciales y secuencias que integran una estructura común, utilizada en el desarrollo del proceso de diseño. Se observa un claro acercamiento y concordancia entre el diseño y la ingeniería para la resolución del problema de diseño.
