This article introduces the current debate about philosophy of biology, starting from the difference between ultimate causes and proximate causes. This distinction allows the differentiation between evolutionary biology and developmental biology. Despite the newer knowledge that we have about Evo-Devo, we claim that it is still possible to draw the line between evolutionary biology and functional biology. Firstly, we go through the differences between evolutionary biology and developmental biology. Secondly, we discuss the division between ultimate cause and proximate cause. Thirdly, we examine what is understood as “Evo-Devo”. Finally, we point out that there is a methodological and epistemological difference between evolutionary biology and functional biology.El artículo introduce al actual debate sobre la filosofía de la biología, a partir de la diferencia entre causas remotas y causas próximas. Esta distinción permite diferenciar entre biología evolutiva y biología del desarrollo. A pesar de los nuevos conocimientos que tenemos de la Evo-Devo, sostenemos que todavía se puede trazar una línea divisora entre biología evolutiva y biología funcional. En primer lugar, revisamos las diferencias entre biología evolutiva y biología del desarrollo. En segundo lugar, discutimos la separación entre causa remota y causa próxima. En tercer lugar, examinamos qué se entiende por Evo-Devo. Por último, señalamos que hay una diferencia metodológica y epistemológica entre biología evolutiva y biología funcional.
