This paper analyzes the dilemma of whether or not to use adaptations of literary texts as pedagogical resources in EFL teaching at the secondary level. This presentation stems from a theoretical framework, which describes some of the various forms of rewriting and analyzes, from both a social and literary perspective, the most frequently used mechanisms of adaptation; as well as the informative function it plays in the field of education. In particular, this work takes Genette´s, Soriano´s and Lefevere´s contributions. Secondly, it shows the results of a survey to a group of teachers on the place of literature in their classes and the reasons for that place. The results of the survey led to a debate initiated at the forum of the International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language on adapting or not literary texts for their use in the EFL class. The conclusion proposes breaking with the elitism based on the supposed quality of readings and comes up with the using of adaptations as the possible starting point of the path towards reading the original text.El presente trabajo ofrece un análisis sobre la conveniencia de utilizar o no utilizar las adaptaciones de textos literarios a modo de recurso pedagógico en la enseñanza del inglés como lengua extranjera en el nivel secundario. Esta presentación parte de un marco teórico, donde se describen diversas formas de reescritura y se analizan, desde una perspectiva tanto social como literaria, los mecanismos de adaptación más empleados, así como su función divulgativa en el campo de la educación. En particular se toman los aportes de Genette, Soriano y Lefevere. En segundo lugar se exponen los resultados de una consulta realizada a un grupo de docentes sobre el espacio que ocupa la literatura en sus clases y los motivos que justifican ese lugar. Los resultados de la encuesta conducen a un debate en el foro de la International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language sobre la “adaptación” o “no adaptación” de los textos literarios para su uso en la clase de FL. En la conclusión se plantea romper con el elitismo basado en la supuesta calidad de las lecturas y se propone utilizar las adaptaciones como el posible inicio del camino hacia la lectura del texto original.
