This article examines the form-meaning correspondences that can be found in Spanish onomatopoeias. It is argued that onomatopoeias can refer to events, and as such, they carry aspectual meaning. In them it is possible to identify a classification in three parts, depending on whether the onomatopoeia has obligatory reduplication or vowel alternation. The reduplication represents the complexity of the internal event, as a bipartite transition or an extended activity; the vowel alternation denotes an internal change of state; it is argued that these two ways of marking iconically represent each one of these two components of aspectual structure.Este trabajo examina las correlaciones entre forma y significado en las onomatopeyas en español. Se argumenta que las onomatopeyas pueden referirse a eventos, y como tales, poseen valor aspectual. En ellas, se propone que deben distinguirse tres clases, que se estructuran conforme a dos divisiones: con reduplicación obligatoria o sin ella, y con alternancia vocálica o sin ella. Se propone que, icónicamente, la reduplicación expresa el carácter complejo de la eventualidad (como transición o como actividad extendida en el tiempo) y la alternancia vocálica codifica la existencia de un cambio interno en el evento expresado por la onomatopeya.
