The Chilean social outbreak of 2019 removed the institutional, political and social bases of the country. Until today it is considered an open crisis. This, since it gave way to a constitutional process that is still in develop, while the discontent of the population and the risk of new mobilizations persists. This work looks forward to analysing the outbreak considering the contributions of the procedural theory of populism. For this, it is argued that the rupture that these events generated in the relations between society and politics were the results of a systematic exclusion that caused an articulation of ignored social demands. The purpose of the analysis is to understand the reasons because of which this crisis was so hard to canalize by the institutional system in 2019, as well as offer a few hypotheses to identify the elements that could have diminished the conflict, at least until now. Finally, some theoretical dilemmas that the outbreak represents for the discussion about populisms are pointed.El estallido social chileno de 2019 removió las bases institucionales, políticas y sociales del país. Hasta el día de hoy, suele considerarse como una crisis abierta; ello en la medida en que dio origen a un proceso constitucional aún en curso, al tiempo que el descontento ciudadano y la amenaza de la movilización persiste. El artículo se propone analizar el estallido desde las teorías del populismo procesual, argumentando que la ruptura que operó en las relaciones entre sociedad y política responde a un proceso de exclusión sistemático que propició la articulación de demandas postergadas. A través de este análisis se buscará entender las razones por las que una crisis de estas características fue tan difícil de procesar por el sistema institucional en 2019, a la vez que se plantean algunas hipótesis respecto de las cuestiones que pudieron haber hecho amainar ―por ahora― el conflicto. Finalmente, se proponen algunas disyuntivas teóricas que el caso del estallido representa para la discusión actual sobre populismos.
