What does writing mean to Civil Engineering Freshmen Students? An approach through Social Representations

| dc.description | Writing, though it is one of the most important skills for production and transmission of knowledge, represents one of the biggest problems that freshmen students face when starting higher education. Given this, in the last couple of years different programs have been created in the Universities that seek to fill this emptiness that students bring from high school education (Carlino, 2013). This research stands upon the reorientation of one of those corrective courses. One of the essential methods to set up a writing course for the objective users is through the investigation of their representations about the subject (González & Rivera, 2009). Thus, the objective of this research is to describe the social representations around writing that arose from 51 freshmen students’ written speech from a Civil Engineering program. The data analysis was based on the procedures of the Grounded Theory. The results show that students perceive writing differently whether it is hard copy writing or a digital copy. In addition, results also show that they do not possess a systematic knowledge about the procedures they need to follow when writing. | en-US |
| dc.description | La escritura, a pesar de ser una de las habilidades más importantes para la producción y divulgación de conocimiento, representa uno de los problemas más grandes que deben sortear los estudiantes que ingresan al sistema educativo superior. Por ello, en el último tiempo han emergido en las Universidades distintos programas institucionales o cursos en primer año que buscan llenar el supuesto vacío que traen los estudiantes desde la enseñanza secundaria (Carlino, 2013). Es en el contexto de la reorientación de uno de estos cursos remediales en que se centra la presente investigación. Uno de los principales métodos para plantear un programa de escritura que sea significativo para los usuarios objetivo es por medio de la indagación de sus representaciones acerca del tema (González y Rivera, 2009). Por ello, el objetivo de este estudio es describir las representaciones sociales en torno a la escritura que se relevaron del discurso escrito de 51 estudiantes de primer año de un programa de Ingeniería Civil de una Universidad del H. Consejo de Rectores de Chile. El análisis de los datos se llevó a cabo siguiendo los procedimientos de la Teoría Empíricamente Fundada. Los resultados hacen ver, por un lado, que los estudiantes perciben de distinta manera la escritura según sea el soporte en que se realice (papel o digital) y, por el otro, que no poseen un conocimiento sistematizado acerca de los procedimientos que se deben seguir al escribir. | es-ES |
