The voiced labiodental fricative [v] has traditionally been rejected as a natural allophone of /b/ in Spanish in general, as well as in Chilean Spanish, although its existence has been admitted in cases of extra-linguistic influence, and recent research has included it in the phonetic inventory. This paper seeks to contribute by providing new data on the production of allophones of /b/, including [v]. To achieve this purpose, audio and video recordings of the speech of 19 pre-literate and literate native speakers of Spanish from Concepción, Chile, were analyzed. The results show that for all speakers, [v] is not just a natural allophone of /b/, it is the most common one. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the existence of [v] is not affected by the literacy process.Tradicionalmente, la literatura especializada descarta el labiodental sonoro [v] como realización natural de /b/ tanto en el castellano en general como en el geolecto de Chile, aunque algunas investigaciones recientes avalan su existencia por influencias extralingüísticas, e investigaciones recientes lo describen dentro de los inventarios fonéticos naturales. Con la finalidad de entregar nuevos antecedentes a la discusión sobre la existencia de una realización labiodental de /b/ y determinar si la alfabetización influye en la producción de los alófonos de /b/, se analizaron las grabaciones de video del habla de 19 hablantes nativos del castellano de Concepción (Chile), divididos en alfabetizados y prealfabetizados. Se constata que [v] no sólo es una realización natural de /b/ en el caso de todos los hablantes, sino que también es la más frecuente. Por último, se descarta la influencia de la alfabetización en la aparición de los alófonos labiodentales en el habla.
