The article deals with the choice between the simple perfect canté and the compound perfect he cantado in Peninsular Spanish in the hodiernal context of hace x horas, when the predicate expresses the aoristic/perfective aspect. In most hodiernal contexts, both tenses are in free variation. The article, based on five empirical tests carried out with different methods and on a total of 670 choices between both forms, focuses on the influence of the presence of hace x horas on the choice between canté and he cantado as well as on what happens as the distance of the past event measured in hours increases. Based on the results, it is obvious that canté is the primary choice with hace x horas. On the other hand, the results do not lend support to the hypothesis of the frequencies of both tenses changing as temporal distance increases.El artículo trata sobre la elección entre el pretérito indefinido (canté) y el pretérito perfecto (he cantado) en el español peninsular en combinación con el complemento temporal hodiernal hace x horas, cuando el predicado expresa el valor aspectual aoristo/perfectivo. en la mayoría de los contextos hodiernales, ambos tiempos están en libre variación. El artículo, basado en cinco pruebas empíricas realizadas siguiendo distintos métodos y en un total de 670 casos de elección entre ambas formas, se focaliza en la influencia de la presencia de hace x horas en la elección entre canté y he cantado así como en lo que ocurre cuando se incrementa la cantidad de horas transcurridas. Sobre la base de los resultados obtenidos, es evidente que canté es la principal opción en presencia de hace x horas. Por otro lado, los supuestos cambios en las frecuencias de ambos tiempos al incrementarse la distancia temporal no encuentran apoyo en los resultados.
