The observation that there still lacked a phono-phonological description of the segmental system of educated speech of Santiago, Chile, despite the number of phonetic investigations that have been made on the speech of this country, resulted in a study on the allophonic behaviour of the educated speech of the capital of Chile in order that there be a point of reference that would serve as the standard of the country. The sample upon which the description is based consists of approximately two and a half hours of recorded speech from various registers produced by 40 educated speakers from three age groups. The above, which is allophonically, narrowly transcribed, was analysed in order to discover the allophonic variation and to properly characterise the segmental patterns of this variety which are different from that which is described as the standard traditional peninsular Spanish accent.La observación de que aún faltaba una descripción fono-fonológica del sistema segmental del habla culta de Santiago de Chile, a pesar de la cantidad de investigaciones fonéticas realizadas sobre el habla de este país, dio por resultado un estudio sobre el comportamiento alofónico en el habla culta de la capital de Chile para que haya un punto de referencia que sirva como el estándar del país. La muestra en la cual se basa la descripción consiste en grabaciones de aproximadamente dos horas y media de habla de distintos registros, producida por 40 hablantes cultos de tres grupos etarios y está transcrita alofónicamente de manera estrecha para descubrir la variación alofónica y para caracterizar de manera concreta los patrones segmentales de esta variedad. Se aborda esta descripción con la premisa de que esta variación es distinta a la que se describe como el acento tradicional estándar del español peninsular.
