In this article the author tests the hypothesis that “wewpin” or “koyagtun”, more than being an individual type of mapuche discourse, constitutes a wide genre of public formal discourse within the ritual and social domains that is crystalized in a variety of speech forms sharing similar linguistic features and different levels of codification, depending on topic and context; and that can be pronounced by a member of the culture who is qualified for his social status and power within the group. For such purpose, there is first a historical revision of classifications and descriptions of “wewpin” to further define its domains and propose a new typologization.En este artículo se desarrolla la hipótesis de que el “wewpin” o “koyagtun”, más que una forma individual de discurso mapuche, constituye un género amplio de discurso público formal cuyo dominio abarca los ámbitos ritual y social, concretándose cada uno de ellos en variadas formas discursivas que presentan rasgos lingüísticos con un mayor o menor grado de codificación según sea el tema y el contexto o situación comunicativa en que ocurren, y que son pronunciados por una persona calificada por su estatus social y poder dentro del grupo. Para ello, se revisan críticamente las clasificaciones y descripciones más relevantes que existen a la fecha sobre el “wewpin”, y se propone un esbozo de tipologización de “wewpin”, intentando a la vez definir sus dominios.
