| dc.description | Modern lexicography, understood as a science applied to language, tends to be descriptive. Does this mean that academic dictionaries, clearly normative, cannnot be modern? In order to address this question, the concepts of ‘descriptivism’ and ‘normativity’ , their inter-relations and their manifestations in lexicography are revised. The necessity to distinguish between the dictionary’s normativity (intrinsic) and the reader´s normativity (extrinsic), and the notion that, although any lexicopraphic work may be extrinsically normative, it is the lexicographer’s task to regulate such normativity and to accept that dictionaries must serve a standardizing purpose, regardless their modern and descriptive claims. | dc.description | La lexicografìa moderna, en tanto ciencia aplicada de lenguaje, tiende a ser descriptiva. ¿Significa esto que los diccionarios académicos, claramente nor-mativos, no pueden aspirar a modernizarse? Para responder a esta pregunta, se revisan los conceptos de descriptivismo y normatividad, sus interrelaciones y sus manifestaciones en la lexicografìa. Se plantea la necesidad de diferen-ciar entre la normatividad del diccionario (normatividad intrínseca) y la del lector (normatividad extrínseca), y se postula que, si bien toda obra lexicográ-fica puede generar una normatividad extrínseca, es responsabilidad del lexi-cógrafo regular dicha normatividad y asumir con espíritu científico que los diccionarios, por más modernos y descriptivos que sean, terminan finalmente sirviendo a un propósito estandarizador. A partir de estas precisiones se propone emprender la modernización de la lexicografía académica.
