We present a revision of several theoretical and practical studies about the analysis of temporal features of speech. The most common methodology to analyze speech production include phenomena as the time, speech, time and length of pauses, among others. The results of these studies show that it is possible to associate the length of pauses with the time dedicated to cognitive processing associated with tasks of word searching and planning of discourse. In this article, we are interested in analyzing and discussing to comment on and discuss features of the analysis methodology of speech production, such as sample size, instrumental analysis and classification of types of pauses. Most of the studies we revised assume that the pauses may be associated with cognitive work. However, it is possible to note that the pauses have other functions, like the communicative function. When we analize samples of natu- ral speech, it is necessary to distinguish between one type of pauses and others in order to discriminate between the process which results from difficulties in the planning of discourse and the processes which give expresion to discourse. A posteriori analysis of linguistic structures that are prepared during pauses and that are used after them could reveal how language works in the mindSe presenta una revisión de diferentes trabajos teóricos y prácticos sobre análisis de los aspectos temporales del habla. Los procedimientos más utili- zados para realizar este tipo de trabajos incluyen la medición de fenómenos como el tiempo de locución, el tiempo y duración de las pausas, entre otros. Los resultados demuestran que es posible asociar el tiempo de duración de las pausas con tiempo dedicado al procesamiento cognitivo asociado con tareas de búsqueda de palabras y con planificación de unidades discursivas. Para efectos de este artículo, interesa comentar y discutir aspectos del procedimiento de análisis de la producción del habla como el tamaño de la muestra, el análisis instrumental y la determinación de los tipos de pausas. En la mayoría de los trabajos revisados se asume que las pausas se asocian a trabajo cognitivo. Sin embargo, es posible advertir que ellas también cumplen otras funciones, como la comunicativa. Cuando se analizan muestras de habla naturales es necesario diferenciar un tipo de pausa de otras para así discriminar entre aquellos procesos derivados de dificultades para planificar el discurso, de aquellos que se realizan con fines fáticos. Un análisis posterior de las estructuras lingüísticas que se preparan durante las pausas y que se llevan a cabo después de ellas podría revelar cómo funciona el lenguaje en la mente.
