Liturgical music is historiographically considered a research trend within the discipline of musicology. This type of music has been traditionally studied almost exclusively by scholars specialised on Western Medieval plainchant. However, liturgists and musicologists have opened their field of study to new periods and geographic regions. In the case of Chile, the patrimony of liturgical music is apparently compound by a small number of musical manuscripts dating from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. However, there are other primary sources that can provide information for the better understanding of the assimilation and use of this music in the country.This paper presents the state of the art with regard to the investigation and potential of the study of liturgical music in Chile, from inside a work-in-progress research project.La música litúrgica es considerada historiográficamente una línea de investigación dentro de la disciplina musicológica. Tradicionalmente este tipo de música ha estado casi exclusivamente vinculada al canto llano occidental de la época medieval. No obstante, las nuevas tendencias de investigación han abierto su campo de estudio hacia nuevos periodos y regiones geográficas. Para el caso de Chile, el patrimonio de música litúrgica está conformado por un aparente escaso número de códices musicales que datan desde el siglo XVI al XIX. Sin embargo, existen otros tipos de fuentes documentales que puedan aportar datos para la mejor comprensión de la asimilación y uso de esta música en el país. Este trabajo presenta el estado de la cuestión con respecto a la investigación y potencialidades de la música litúrgica en Chile, dentro de una propuesta de investigación propia.
