The Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile declares its mission to provide comprehensive health solutions to the community. Pediatric medicine should be an active part of this statement. However, in the last 2 years, progress in the pediatric development project, represented by the start-up of the Pediatric Critical Patient Unit of the Pediatric Service, has been minimal. Is this just an unintentional omission of the directive? Or does pediatric medicine not really belong to this institution? We have decided to reflect on the facts presented to us by history and recent events. Our questions are: has there been a joint development of the University of Chile through its clinical hospital and pediatric medicine? In what way? How has it been manifested? We seek the answer in historical backgrounds, recent events and try to define whether there are outstanding commitments to strengthen such joint development. Since its inception, the hospital's history has maintained a relationship with the care of sick children. A difficult relationship, with many adversities but where has excelled the effort, tenacity, commitment and excellence of pediatric doctors who have fought for a medicine and a university of care, teaching and social nature. Recently, the University of Chile and its Clinical Hospital recognize, support and express publicly that pediatric medicine is part of its history and that it should remain in it. The opening of a Pediatric Critical Patient Unit is a pending commitment that would allow to improve the clinical experience in complex patients, as well as progressively join the training of pediatric subspecialists in intensive care and consolidate what has been done so far. Pediatric medicine is an existential reality that is necessary to recognize and strengthen, and to which only one alternative fits: to fulfill outstanding commitments.El Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile declara su misión de otorgar soluciones integrales de salud a la comunidad. La medicina pediátrica debería ser parte activa de esta declaración. Sin embargo, en los últimos 2 años, el progreso en el proyecto de desarrollo pediátrico, representado por la puesta en marcha de la Unidad de Paciente Crítico Pediátrico del Servicio de Pediatría, ha sido mínimo. Esto ¿es sólo una involuntaria omisión directiva? o ¿la medicina pediátrica no pertenece realmente a esta institución? Hemos decidido realizar una reflexión a partir de los hechos que nos presenta la historia y los acontecimientos recientes. Nuestras interrogantes son: ¿ha existido un desarrollo conjunto de la Universidad de Chile a través de su hospital clínico y la medicina pediátrica? ¿De qué forma? ¿Cómo se ha manifestado? Buscamos la respuesta en antecedentes históricos, acontecimientos recientes e intentamos definir si hay compromisos pendientes para fortalecer dicho desarrollo conjunto. Desde sus inicios, la historia del hospital ha mantenido una relación con la atención de los niños enfermos. Una relación difícil, con muchas adversidades pero donde ha sobresalido el esfuerzo, la tenacidad, el compromiso y la excelencia de médicos pediatras que han luchado por una medicina y una universidad de carácter asistencial, docente y social. En lo reciente, la Universidad de Chile y su Hospital Clínico reconocen, apoyan y explicitan públicamente que la medicina pediátrica es parte de su historia y que debe seguir en ella. La apertura de una Unidad de Paciente Crítico Pediátrico es un compromiso pendiente que permitiría mejorar la experiencia clínica en pacientes complejos, así como incorporarse progresivamente a la formación de subespecialistas pediátricos en cuidados intensivos y consolidar lo realizado hasta ahora. La medicina pediátrica es una realidad existencial que es necesario reconocer y fortalecer, y a la cual sólo cabe una alternativa: dar cumplimiento a los compromisos pendientes.
