“Exemplary”, “Exceptional” and “Singular” Populisms. Towards a Historical-Conceptual and Political-Intellectual Understanding of Populism in Latin America in the Seventies

| dc.description | This article aims to outline answers that allow us to elucidate when and how populism was constituted as a Latin American political concept. Who were its conceptual producers? And what do these conceptualizations and their various uses reveal about vast sociopolitical transformations in the region? A conceptual, historical and a political-intellectual approach is used to scrutinize connections between debates and problems around “the populist question” in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico during the seventies. We traced different uses of the concept and modes of theoretical approach used by intellectuals and academics from the subcontinent to “manufacture” the concept. Our analysis shows that populism is a key concept in the political lexicon of Latin America and that debates over its definition on a continental scale, catalyzed representations of “the autochthonous” and “the own” of Latin American politics. We are dealing with a concept that made possible the invention of that representation called Latin America, a category that in the early years of the 1970s was endowed with an essential identity, articulated with new versions of self-exoticism and the negative dimension of the forms of organization of community life in the subcontinent. The article contributes to the understanding of the debates around populism on a national and continental scale, connecting representations, problems and conceptualizations that gave life to the idea according to which the essence of 20th century Latin American politics is the opposite of the ideal or desirable political horizons. | en-US |
| dc.description | El presente artículo se propone esbozar respuestas que nos permitan dilucidar cuándo y cómo el populismo se constituyó como un concepto político latinoamericano. ¿Quiénes fueron sus productores conceptuales? Y ¿qué revelan dichas conceptualizaciones y sus variados usos respecto a transformaciones sociopolíticas más vastas acontecidas en la región? Se acude a un enfoque histórico conceptual y político intelectual para auscultar conexiones entre problemas y debates en torno a “la cuestión populista” en países como Argentina, Brasil, Colombia y México durante los años setenta. Se rastrean usos diversos del término y modos de producción teórica utilizados por intelectuales y académicos del subcontinente para “fabricar” el concepto. Nuestro análisis muestra que el populismo es un concepto clave en el léxico político de América Latina y que los debates por su definición a escala continental catalizaron representaciones sobre “lo autóctono” y “lo propio” de la política latinoamericana. Concluimos que estamos ante un concepto que hizo posible la invención de esa representación llamada América Latina, una categoría que en los primeros años de la década de 1970 fue dotada de una identidad esencial, articulada a nuevas versiones sobre el autoexotismo y la dimensión negativa de las formas de organización de la vida comunitaria en el subcontinente. El artículo aporta a la comprensión de los debates en torno al populismo a escala nacional y continental, conectando representaciones, problemas y conceptualizaciones que dieron vida a la idea según la cual la esencia de la política latinoamericana del siglo XX es lo opuesto a los horizontes políticos ideales o deseables. | es-ES |
