This study applies the methodological approach of the Project to the analysis of beliefs and attitudes towards varieties of Spanish in the 21st century (PRECAVES XXI). It offers a summary of the prevailing research that has been conducted on this topic in Cuba and examines the results, which report on the beliefs and attitudes of Cubans towards the Chilean variety of speech. On the one hand, it highlights the need for continued research by means of an interdisciplinary approach and recognizes the importance of paying greater attention to diasporic Cuban communities. On the other, based on a stratified sample of 108 speakers, it concludes that Cubans register a low degree of proximity towards the Chilean variety, which is demonstrated by their recurring confusion between this variety and that of the Canaries; and they hold, in large measure, the pronunciation of latter variety in lower regard. No significant variations are observed according to the sociolinguistic variables of the study. Further, respondents offered positive evaluations towards Chileans, focused especially on affective characteristics such as friendliness, professionalism, kindness and education.Este trabajo toma en cuenta los presupuestos metodológicos del Proyecto para el estudio de las creencias y actitudes hacia las variedades del español en el siglo XXI (PRECAVES XXI). Se ofrece una síntesis de las principales investigaciones sobre este tema en Cuba y se examinan los resultados sobre las creencias y actitudes de los cubanos hacia la variedad chilena de habla. Por una parte, se destaca la necesidad de continuar investigando con una mirada interdisciplinar y se reconoce la importancia de prestar mayor atención a comunidades de cubanos en situación de migración. Por otra, partiendo de la muestra estratificada de 108 hablantes, se concluye que los cubanos registran un grado de proximidad bajo hacia la variedad chilena, lo que se demuestra con la confusión recurrente entre esta variedad y la canaria; y estiman, en mayor medida, la pronunciación de esta variedad de manera negativa. No se aprecian variaciones significativas según las variables sociolingüísticas del estudio. Asimismo, los encuestados ofrecieron valoraciones positivas hacia los chilenos, enfocadas, especialmente, en características afectivas como la amabilidad, la profesionalidad, la bondad y la educación.
