To compare academic performance of nursing students, cohort 2016 and 2017, with objective-based methodology, versus competency-based methodology. Quantitative, descriptive, comparative, prospective, transversal. Nursing students from Pedro de Valdivia University, who carried out their clinical practice in the subject of medical surgery, were evaluated through clinical practice guidelines in the Medicine and Surgery Service of the Antonio Tirado Lanas de Ovalle Hospital. Statistical analysis was performed using the Student's t-test for independent samples, with a confidence level of 95% using the SPSS software, version 24. The study population was made up of 48 students, 18 from 2016 and 30 from 2017. In the cognitive area, the 2016 cohort had an average of 5.8 + - 0.8 and the 2017 cohort students had one of 4 .5 + - 0.9. In the procedural area, the 2016 cohort had an average of 4.3 + - 1.2 and the 2017 cohort, one of 5.0 + - 0.9. In the attitudinal area, the 2016 cohort had an average of 4.7 + - 1.0 and the 2017 cohort one of 5.7 + - 1.1. There are statistically significant differences between the 2016 and 2017 cohorts in the cognitive, procedural and attitudinal areas.Comparar rendimiento académico de los estudiantes de enfermería, cohorte 2016 y 2017, con metodología basada en objetivos versus metodología basada en competencias. Cuantitativo, descriptivo, comparativo, prospectivo, transversal. Se evaluaron estudiantes de la carrera de enfermería, Universidad Pedro de Valdivia que realizaron su práctica clínica en la asignatura de médico quirúrgico, a través de pautas de práctica clínica en el Servicio de Medicina y Cirugía, del Hospital Antonio Tirado Lanas de Ovalle. Se realizó análisis estadístico a través de la prueba t de Student para muestras independientes, con un nivel de confianza del 95% mediante el software SPSS versión 24. La población de estudio estuvo conformada por 48 estudiantes, 18 del año 2016 y 30 del año 2017. En el área cognitiva la cohorte 2016, tuvo un promedio de 5,8 +- 0,8 y los estudiantes de la cohorte 2017 uno de 4,5 +- 0,9. En el área procedimental, la cohorte 2016 tuvo un promedio de 4,3 +- 1,2 y la cohorte 2017, uno de 5,0 +- 0,9. En el área actitudinal la cohorte 2016 tuvo un promedio de 4,7 +- 1,0 y la cohorte 2017 uno de 5,7 +- 1,1. Existen diferencias estadísticamente significativas, entre las cohortes 2016 y 2017, en  las áreas cognitiva, procedimental y actitudinal.
