The work, first and in a general way, deals with the meaning and meaning that is given to social research and professional practice in Social Work. In the second place, it raises reflections that allow noticing the need to do research from more integrating and comprehensive designs (Falla, 2009). In the third term, and in a certain way, the historical-critical debate that in the profession has been about the generation of knowledge is collected; this, on the one hand, emphasizing the search for specificity, which is related to practicality and, on the other, for the arguments raised from the historical-critical option.El trabajo, en primer lugar y de modo general, trata del sentido y significado que se le da a la investigación social y a la práctica profesional en Trabajo Social. En segundo lugar, plantea reflexiones que permiten advertir la necesidad de hacer investigación a partir de diseños más integradores y comprensivos (Falla, 2009). En tercer término, y de cierta forma, se recoge el debate histórico-crítico que en la profesión se ha dado acerca de la generación de conocimiento; ello, por una parte, enfatizando en la búsqueda de especificidad, que se relaciona con el practicismo y, por otra, por los argumentos planteados desde la opción histórico-crítico.
