Number terms in discourse can receive not only exact interpretations, but also intervalar readings (‘at most n’, ‘at least n’, ‘approximately n’). In some linguistic contexts, number terms can be ambiguous among several readings, but in others ambiguity is impossible and only an exact interpretation is allowed. We therefore need to establish the semantic content of a number term that serves as input for the pragmatic processes that lead to its final interpretation, and to understand the variables that affect it. This problem has led to at least three general positions on the meaning of number terms in the system of a natural language. Here I propose that number terms, just like the rest of conceptual lexical items, are subject to meaning modulation processes on each occasion of use. Rather than being encoders of exact cardinalities, number terms seem to be lexical pointers to a conceptual region that encompasses the concepts that can be communicated through their use. However, the possibility of lexical adjustment can be blocked by procedural semantic features in the construction where the number term appears. This explains that in some contexts only an exact interpretation for a number term is available. Here I detail the workings of this proposal in the following contexts: definite structures, contexts where a number term has a predicative function, contexts where it appears as a discourse comment, and contexts where a number term appears in a quantified referring expression used to refer collectivelyLos términos numéricos en el discurso pueden recibir no solamente interpretaciones exactas sino también intervalares (‘a lo más n’, ‘por lo menos n’,‘aproximadamente n’). En algunos contextos lingüísticos existe la posibilidad de que un término numérico tenga más de una interpretación, pero en otros la ambigüedad es imposible y solamente es aceptable una lectura puntual. Resulta necesario, entonces, establecer cuál es la semántica léxica de un término numérico sobre la cual operan procesos pragmáticos que conducen a una u otra interpretación final, así como esclarecer los factores que inciden en ella. Este problema ha dado lugar a al menos tres posturas generales sobre el significado de un término numérico en el sistema de una lengua natural. Propongo aquí que los términos numéricos, al igual que el resto de los elementos léxicos conceptuales, están sujetos a procesos de modulación del significado, y que más que remitir de manera directa y rígida al concepto de una cardinalidad exacta, un término numérico es un indicador léxico del tipo de conceptos a los que se puede denotar con su uso. En presencia de ciertos rasgos procedimentales, no obstante, la posibilidad de ajuste conceptual del término numérico se restringe y obliga a una interpretación puntual. Aquí detallo el funcionamiento de esta propuesta en los contextos en los que un término numérico aparece en una construcción definida, en función predicativa, en función de comentario discursivo y en expresiones referenciales cuantificadas que se usan para referir colectivamente.
