| dc.description | This study seeks to reconstruct the history of English teaching in Chile, based on historical, referential and scientific documents from the beginning of the 20th century. This with the aim of answering why and what for English has been taught and learned in the country and thus stating the status of the foreign language in its linguistic policies and planning and, therefore, in the national curriculum. It was found that English has been highly valued in the development of citizenship. English has been taught and will be taught as a means of exchange to access more and better educational, employment and economic opportunities, which gives way to political and social tensions. | en-US |
| dc.description | En este trabajo se buscó reconstruir la historia de la enseñanza del inglés en Chile con base en documentos históricos, referenciales y científicos que datan desde comienzos del siglo XIX. Esto con el objeto de responder por qué y para qué se ha enseñado y aprendido inglés en el país, así como determinar el estatus que se le ha dado a la lengua extranjera en las políticas y planificación lingüísticas chilenas y, por ende, en el currículo nacional. Se encontró que al inglés se le ha adjudicado un alto valor en la formación de los ciudadanos chilenos desde los orígenes de nuestro sistema educacional. El inglés se enseñó, se enseña y se enseñará como una moneda de cambio para acceder a más y mejores oportunidades educacionales, laborales y económicas, lo que genera tensiones entre lo político y lo social. | es-ES |
