| dc.description | The uprising that took place in Copiapó during the Chilean Civil War of 1859 has been broadly analyzed as a revolt led by an elite which was both modern and burgueois. This group was regarded by historians as different from the rest of the traditional social leading class. In this paper we intend to clarify this thesis. By analyzing judicial proceedings, unpublished chronicles and notarial archives, the article shows that the war reinforced the power of the families of mining magnates who have increased their power through the use of clientelistic networks. The social dynamics imposed by the war reinforced the importance of the attached links, the power of the local elite as well as personal loyalties, creating conditions for the emergence of caudillo leadership. | en-US |
| dc.description | El levantamiento copiapino producido en el marco de la Guerra Civil de 1859 ha tendido a ser analizado como una sublevación encabezada por una élite minera moderna, de rasgos burgueses, distinta del resto del grupo social dirigente chileno, una hipótesis que en este trabajo pretendemos matizar. Mediante el análisis de procesos judiciales, crónicas inéditas y archivos notariales, mostraremos cómo la guerra reforzó el poder de las familias de magnates mineros, quienes habrían aumentado su poder mediante el empleo de redes clientelísticas. Se argumenta que la dinámica social impuesta por la guerra reforzó la importancia de los vínculos adscritos, del poder de la élite local y de las lealtades personales, creando las condiciones para el surgimiento de liderazgos caudillistas. | es-ES |
