| dc.description | Chile is a country that throughout its history has been constantly plagued by several natural disasters, which not only took the lives of thousands of citizens and caused pain and material losses, but also put to the test to both the authorities and the community. In this regard, the purpose of this research was to study how El Mercurio and La Tercera –the most important newspapers of the leading Chilean written press media’s duopoly- framed the most destructive catastrophes that happened in the past two years: The Earthquake of Iquique and Coquimbo, The Alluvium of Copiapó and The Fire of Valparaíso. All this in order to analyze both qualitatively and quantitatively the framing of these newspapers regarding the natural disasters, so the contributions and shortcomings of these Chilean press medias when reporting on these extreme situations can be established in a critical way, taking into account that normatively, to these phenomena, press is expected to be a forum both for balances of what happened, as for discussion on the future reconstruction. | en-US |
| dc.description | Chile es un país que a lo largo de su historia ha sido constantemente azotado por diversos desastres naturales, que no sólo costaron la vida de miles de ciudadanos y trajeron dolor y pérdidas materiales, sino que pusieron a prueba tanto a las autoridades como a la comunidad. El propósito de esta investigación fue estudiar cómo encuadraron El Mercurio de Santiago y La Tercera, los dos diarios más importantes del duopolio mediático que lidera el sistema de prensa escrita, las catástrofes más destructivas que sucedieron en los últimos dos años en este país: Los terremotos de Iquique y de Coquimbo, el aluvión de Copiapó y el incendio de Valparaíso. Todo esto con el fin de analizar tanto de manera cualitativa como cuantitativa los encuadres de estos diarios a los desastres naturales. Así, de manera crítica, establecer los aportes y falencias de estos medios chilenos al momento de informar sobre estas situaciones límites, teniendo presente que se espera normativamente que la prensa ante estos fenómenos, a diferencia de otros soportes con mayor inmediatez, sea tanto un foro para balances de lo ocurrido como de discusión sobre la futura reconstrucción. | es-ES |
