One of the reasons for defecting from the education system is the lack of interest in pursuing studies at both the middle and higher levels. Based on this problem it was established as the main objective of the research is to measure school commitment in the students belonging to the eighth year of basic education who attend municipal schools in the city of Talca, which is located in the Maule Region, Chile . The research was carried out during the year 2019, for this it was used in a quantitative methodology, both to collect information and for its analysis, it was used an adaptation of the instrument designed by Indiana University called National Survey of Student Engagement, which measures seven dimensions: institutional support, active learning and collaborative, enriching educational experiences, interaction with teachers, intrinsic factors, extrinsic factors and academic challenge. The instrument was applied to a total of the eight percent of the total of vulnerable schools, reaching a total of three hundred and ninety students. The findings indicate that there is a difference in the level of school commitment by sex and between students who have repeated and those who have not repeated the course in basic education, not appreciating significant differences in the rest of the variables measured.Una de las razones para desertar del sistema educativo es la falta de interés por proseguir estudios tanto a nivel medio como superior. A partir de este problema el objetivo principal de la investigación es medir el compromiso escolar en los estudiantes pertenecientes al octavo año de educación básica y que asisten a escuelas municipales en la ciudad de Talca, la que se encuentra ubicada en la Región del Maule, Chile. La investigación se realizó durante el año 2019, para ello se utilizó en una metodología cuantitativa descriptiva-transversal, tanto para recolectar información como para su análisis, se utilizó una adaptación del instrumento diseñado por la Universidad de Indiana denominado National Survey of Student Engagement, el cual mide siete dimensiones: apoyo institucional, aprendizaje activo y colaborativo, experiencias educativas enriquecedoras, interacción con los docentes, factores intrínsecos, factores extrínsecos y reto académico. El instrumento fue aplicado a una total del ocho por ciento del total de los centros educativos vulnerables, alcanzando un total de trescientos noventa estudiantes. Los hallazgos Indican que existe diferencia en el nivel de compromiso escolar por sexo y entre los estudiantes que han repetido y aquellos que no han repetido de curso en Enseñanza básica no apreciando diferencias significativas en el resto de las variables medidas.
