The purpose of this essay is to present a historical and curricular approach to graduate schools in rural Chile, understanding them as rural primary education centers very similar to urban ones, although also very peculiar. It is necessary to look at the political and socio-geographical context in which rural graduate schools are forged, to be able to know the needs they have had to overcome over time and to analyse and understand the territorial and curricular implementation peculiarities that characterize them. Likewise, to allow some reflections that motivate the study of these educational centres, especially in the last stated aspect. The approach considers some transcendental milestones in matters of urban and rural education, that is, national events that occurred in different moments of the XIX, XX and XXI centuries. Through the review of scientific and normative documents, the emergence, the qualities, and some curricular challenges of this type of school are put into perspective; challenges that, by the way, are still in force.Este ensayo tiene por objeto presentar una aproximación histórica y curricular respecto a las escuelas graduadas del medio rural chileno, entendiéndolas como centros rurales de enseñanza básica muy similares a los urbanos, aunque también, muy peculiares. Se hace necesario mirar el contexto político y sociogeográfico en el que surgen y se forjan las escuelas graduadas rurales, para conocer las necesidades que han tenido que sortear a través del tiempo y para analizar y comprender las peculiaridades territoriales y de implementación curricular que las caracterizan. Asimismo, para permitir algunas reflexiones que motiven el estudio de estos centros educativos, especialmente, en el último aspecto indicado. El acercamiento considera algunos hitos trascendentales en materia de educación urbana y rural, esto es, hechos nacionales suscitados en diferentes momentos del siglo XIX, XX y XXI. Mediante la revisión documental científica y normativa, se ponen en perspectiva el surgimiento, las cualidades y algunos desafíos curriculares propios de este tipo de escuelas; retos que, por cierto, aún se encuentran vigentes.
