In the last few years, Spanish law firms’ workload and foreign business activity in Spain have increased. The number of English-speaking immigrants in the Peninsula has also substantially risen. These events make the English<>Spanish translation of Police and Crime Law documents in general and criminal records in particular of utmost importance. Nevertheless, we have noticed that this topic has never been researched to date. That is the reason why we analyzed and compared 70 criminal records, real translation briefs from 2012 and 2013, 10 from Spain, 10 from England, Wales and Northern Ireland, 10 from Scotland, 10 from USA, 10 from Canada, 10 from Australia and 10 from New Zealand. Our aim was to identify several divergences and facilitate the translation task; both direct (English-Spanish) and reverse (Spanish-English), of the text typology originated from this branch of Crime Law. Our findings show striking differences after an interlinguistic and an intralinguistic analysis.En los últimos años la carga de trabajo en los bufetes españoles y la expansión empresarial extranjera en España han ido incrementándose, asimismo, el número de inmigrantes angloparlantes en la península ha aumentado notablemente. Todo ello hace que la traducción inglés<>español de documentos penales y policiales en general y de los certificados de antecedentes penales en particular resulte de vital importancia. Sin embargo, hemos observado que nunca se ha abordado esta investigación con anterioridad; por esta razón, hemos investigado y cotejado 70 certificados de antecedentes penales, procedentes de encargos reales de traducción de 2012 y 2013, 10 de España, 10 de Inglaterra, Gales e Irlanda del Norte, 10 de Escocia, 10 de Estados Unidos, 10 de Canadá, 10 de Australia y 10 de Nueva Zelanda; todo ello con objeto de detectar divergencias de índole variada y facilitar la tarea traductora directa (inglés-español) e inversa (español-inglés) de la tipología textual que emana de esta rama del derecho penal. Los resultados pondrán de manifiesto las notables diferencias inter e intralingüísticas.
