Syntactic complexity and quality of writing: a developmental study in narrative and explanatory texts by high school students

dc.descriptionThe study aims to analyze the relationship between six measures of syntactic complexity (MCS) and the writing quality in adolescents. 160 narrative and explanatory texts written by 80 7th and 11th grade high school students from two schools in Santiago were analyzed. Through a correlational analysis, the results show that the text length is the measure most related to quality in all groups, while other measures of density and syntactic complexity are only related to performance in grade 11. In addition, it was verified that this relationship is also affected by the discourse genre (more MCS in explanations) and the SES (more phrasal resources in high socioeconomic status –SES–, and more clause resources in medium SES). More research is needed on the relationship between syntactic complexity and the quality of writing, a topic of great pedagogical and developmental interest that has not been much studied in Chile.en-US
dc.descriptionEl estudio se propone analizar la relación entre seis medidas de complejidad sintáctica (MCS) y la calidad de la escritura en adolescentes. Se analizaron 160 textos narrativos y explicativos escritos por 80 estudiantes secundarios de séptimo básico y tercero medio de dos colegios de Santiago de distinto nivel socioeconómico (NS). Mediante un análisis correlacional, se determinó que la extensión del texto es la medida más relacionada con la calidad en todos los grupos, mientras que otras medidas de densidad y complejidad sintácticas solo se relacionan con el desempeño en tercero medio. Además, se comprobó que esta relación también se ve afectada por el género discursivo (más MCS en los textos explicativos) y el NS (más recursos frásticos en el NS alto y más recursos clausulares en el NS medio). Se concluye la necesidad de seguir investigando la relación entre complejidad sintáctica y calidad de la escritura, un tópico de gran interés evolutivo y pedagógico que ha sido poco estudiado en Chile.es-ES
