| dc.description | Repair, a humble act born of necessity, has become in the 21st century an expression of artistic and discursive resistance to humankind’s unmaking of our societies and our environment. As a concrete practice, it serves to bring us together, to re-engage with materiality, and to invite us as consumers back to understanding the contexts of makers and making. As a metaphor and speculative meta-concept, it gives us an alternative and holistic way to attend to and face systemic social and environmental breakdown. To expand upon our respective approaches to repair in concept and practice, we issued a call for reflections on repair thinking and practices in the realm of art and design, resulting in the volume Repair: Sustainable Design Futures (Routledge, 2023), edited by us. This essay provides an overview of the book, highlighting the voices and artwork of the international, interdisciplinary group of authors included in the volume, speaking to multiple forms of brokenness and repair as entry points for sparking novel insights into how we might attend to our broken social and physical worlds. As a constellation of reflections on repair thinking and practices, the essays included in the book offer reparative responses to fractured systems, relationships, cities, architecture, and objects. Together they posit repair thinking as a way of addressing and nurturing our broken world. | en-US |
| dc.description | Reparar, un acto humilde nacido de la necesidad, se ha convertido, en el siglo XXI, en una expresión de resistencia artística y discursiva ante la descomposición que los humanos causamos en nuestras sociedades y nuestro entorno. Como práctica concreta, sirve para unirnos, para volver a comprometernos con la materialidad e invitarnos, como consumidores, a comprender los contextos de quienes crean y su quehacer. Como metáfora y metaconcepto especulativo, nos proporciona una forma alternativa y holística de prestar atención al colapso social y ambiental sistémico y, a la vez, enfrentarlo. Para ampliar nuestros respectivos enfoques de reparación, conceptualmente y en la práctica, lanzamos una convocatoria para reflexionar sobre el pensamiento y las prácticas de reparación en el ámbito del arte y el diseño, cuyo resultado fue el volumen Repair: Sustainable Design Futures (Routledge, 2023), editado por nosotros. Este ensayo ofrece una visión general del libro y destaca las voces y las obras de arte del grupo internacional e interdisciplinario de autores incluidos en la publicación, quienes abordan múltiples formas de ruptura y reparación, tomándolos como puntos de entrada para generar nuevas ideas sobre cómo podríamos prestar atención a nuestros mundos sociales y físicos rotos. Los ensayos incluidos en el libro ofrecen respuestas reparadoras a sistemas, relaciones, ciudades, arquitecturas y objetos fracturados, formando una constelación de reflexiones sobre el pensamiento y las prácticas de reparación.
