At the end of 1968 a group of students of the School of Pedagogy of the Catholic Pontificia Universidad of Chile founded the University Rural Worker Department -DUOC- as a result of the University Reform which started the previous year, the idea was that the University was in the service of the most abandoned and culturally isolated and that the students started to train, develop and edúcate to whom had not had access to it.The objective of this article is to make known the histórica! origins of the DUOC, high lighting its institutional philosophy and the organizational developmenl during the first decade of existence.A fines de 1968 un grupo de estudiantes de la Escuela de Pedagogía de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile fundó el Departamento Universitario Obrero Campesino -DUOC- como fruto de la Reforma Universitaria iniciada el año anterior. Se deseaba que la Universidad estuviera al servicio de los más desposeídos culturalmente; que los estudiantes dejaran su torre de marfil y entregaran capacitación, perfeccionamiento y formación técnica a quienes no habían tenido acceso a ella.El objetivo de este artículo consiste en dar a conocer los orígenes históricos del DUOC, enfatizando su filosofía institucional y el desarrollo organizacional de la misma durante su primera década de existencia.
