| dc.description | In this paper we review the relation betwwwn politics, language planning and metalinguistic reflections about the Mapudungun language in the first half of the 17th century in Chile. This was a decisive time as the strategies and planning of the spiritual conquest of the indigenous people were being discussed and planned out. Luis de Valdivia, a Jesuit from Granada, was the main proponent in explaining the defensive war. Valdivia’s work can be considered missionary linguistics, and within it one can differentiate between metalinguistics and religious instruction. In this paper we focus on his metalinguistic writings and we describe his Arte y gramática (1606), a piece which we understand as a methodological, systematic way of implementing the defensive war, and as a result of the institutionalization of the predominating discourse of the Catholic Church and the Spanish throne in order to conquer Latin America. | en-US |
| dc.description | En este trabajo revisamos la relación entre política, planificación en el uso de las lenguas y reflexiones metalingüísticas sobre el mapudungun en el Chile de la primera mitad del siglo XVII, un momento especialmente álgido, ya que en él se discuten y elaboran las estrategias de la “conquista espiritual” de los indígenas, pretendida por la guerra defensiva, cuyo principal exponente es el jesuita granadino Luis de Valdivia. Su trabajo se materializa en varias obras de lingüística misionera, en la cual diferenciamos los textos de acuerdo con su finalidad, como metalingüísticos y catequéticos. Para centrarnos en los primeros, describimos su Arte y gramática (1606), obra que entendemos como una forma de sistematización metodológica para ejecutar la guerra defensiva y como el resultado de la institucionalización de los discursos hegemónicos de la Iglesia y de la Corona en América en relación con las lenguas vernáculas. | es-ES |
