Never before in human history has education been as important as it is now. The technical and scientific civilization on which our world is currently based requires calls for extensive education. In the last 40 years, Chile has made great efforts to renew and improve its education system. This is evidenced by the major educational reform implemented during the administration of former President Eduardo Frei Montalva, the Higher Education Law enacted in 1980, the programs implemented to foster scientific research in addition to the current reform which is intended to modernize teaching methods and equip schools with state of the art media and technology. This has produced deep changes, particularly quantitative ones. Therefore, it is imperative to improve the quality of education which should be a task of top priority for the State. However, we are fully aware that we cannot expect everything from the State. Society at large is responsible for education and this means that education is a collective responsibilityNunca en la historia humana la educación ha sido tan importante como en la actualidad. La civilización científicotécnica en que se basa el mundo contemporáneo requiere elevados niveles de educacional formal. En los últimos cuarenta años, Chile ha desplegado grandes esfuerzos para renovar y perfeccionar su sistema educativo. Pruebas de ello son la masiva reforma del sistema educativo llevada a cabo durante el gobierno del ex Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva, la Ley de Educación Superior de 1980, el fomento de la investigación científica, y la reforma actual, que tiene por finalidad modernizar los métodos de enseñanza y dotar a las escuelas de los más modernos medios tecnológicos. Todo ello ha producido profundos cambios, aunque éstos han sido ante todo de carácter cuantitativo; es urgente, pues, mejorar la calidad de la educación, que debe ser una tarea prioritaria del Estado. Sin embargo, bien sabemos que no podemos esperar todo del Estado: la educación es responsabilidad de toda la sociedad, lo que equivale a decir que es responsabilidad de todos.
